Charitable giving through estate planning

Many of us have causes or institutions that are close to our hearts, like charities, schools, hospitals, or places of worship. Charitable giving through estate planning is a great way to continue supporting these causes through your estate after you pass away, helping you to have a lasting impact on the causes that you care about.

Leave a bequest in your will

The simplest way to make sure that you can continue making financial contributions to the causes that are most important to you is to leave a bequest in your will. Once this is accurately drafted by your lawyer, and sometimes in consultation with the charity, you’ll have peace of mind knowing that part of your gift will be received after you pass away.

Establish a private charitable foundation

If you want to leave a large amount to the organisations you care about, you may wish to consider setting up a private charitable foundation. This is another way to ensure that you can continue to use your estate to benefit the causes close to your heart in an ongoing capacity.

How do I incorporate charitable giving into my existing will?

If you already have an existing will, you may wish to consider updating it to include charitable giving – or you may be looking to commence your journey of estate planning and to ensure that you’re leaving funds to your favourite charity as part of that process.
